2023 TDOT/KTnB Awards of Excellence Grants

The 2023 TDOT/KTnB Biennial Conference, featuring the Awards of Excellence, will take place in September 2023.

The conference will feature TDOT and Keep TN Beautiful's announcement of KTnB’s Awards of Excellence, presenting 16 grants totaling $57,000 to environmental leaders across the state.

2023 TDOT/KTnB Awards of Excellence

Categories 1 and 2

  • Category 1: Public Education

    First ($4,000), second ($2,000), and third ($1,000) awards will be given to organizations or individuals for outstanding public education activities involving citizens working together to improve their community’s appearance. Applications will be accepted for the following sub-categories:

    Adults

    Businesses

    Government

    Media

    Schools – Grades K-8

    Schools – Grades 9-12

    Higher Education – Junior Colleges, Universities & Vocational

    (Do not submit the same narrative for multiple categories, so choose wisely!)

  • Category 2: Public Participation

    Given to an organization or group of individuals who are superior in the promotion, participation, and scope of a public participation event ($2,000 each category).

    Great American Cleanup™ of Tennessee Awards

    One $2,000 award will be given for the best overall Great American Cleanup™ Program

    America Recycles Day of Tennessee Awards

    One $2,000 award will be given to an America Recycles Day event that demonstrates creativity, broad scope of citizen and government involvement, and total results.

    Adopt-A-Highway Awards

    One $2,000 award will be given to the best Adopt-A-Highway program.

    Lakes, Rivers & Streams Litter Free Award

    One $2,000 award will be given to the best organized effort to promote/participate in cleanup of TN waterways.

Category 3: Leadership

  • Edith Heller Lifetime Achievement Award

    The Edith Heller Lifetime Achievement Award is presented in grateful appreciation of her 30 plus years of dedicated service to Tennessee and the nation. A once-in-a-lifetime distinction award for a person who has demonstrated longtime leadership in raising public awareness about solid waste issues, litter prevention, community greening, and/or recycling. This person has also successfully demonstrated the need for citizens to participate in activities that preserve and enhance natural resources and public lands in Tennessee. This person may be a volunteer or employee who has consistently excelled above and beyond expectations. This award is the highest one given by Keep Tennessee Beautiful. Each winner can only be given this award one time. The award money of $2,000 will be given to the non-profit environmental organization of his/her choice.

  • Judge Larry E. Potter Law Enforcement Award

    The Larry E. Potter Law Enforcement Award is a once in a lifetime award recognizing a law enforcement professional, such as a police officer, prosecutor, judge or environmental compliance officer, who has gone above and beyond in their approaches to enforcement of environmental laws and regulations. The winner will receive $2,000 which will be given to the non-profit environmental organization of his/her choice.

  • Shawn Bible Community Leadership Award

    The Shawn Bible Community Leadership Award, newly named after TDOT Highway Beautification Office Administrator, Shawn Bible in honor of her outstanding career efforts in Keeping Tennessee Beautiful.

    One $1,500 award will be given to an individual for outstanding educational and community leadership. Serving as role model, this person has given beyond the norm as a leader and Keep Tennessee Beautiful Affiliate Coordinator.

  • Martin L. Kennedy Award For Outstanding TN Keep America Beautiful Affiliate Coordinator

    One $1,500 award will be given to an organization and/or individual for outstanding educational and community leadership. Serving as role model (s), this person (s) of leadership has given beyond the norm. The Martin L. Kennedy Award, named in honor of the first TDOT Highway Beautification Office Administrator, recognizes outstanding, professional service by a LGP or KAB staff member. The award money will be given to the non-profit environmental organization of his/her choice. The recipient can be from one of the following eligible categories:

    Community Group

    Community Volunteer

    Litter Grant Administrator

Categories 4, 5, and 6

  • Category 4 TDOT County Litter Grant Program Award Class A and Class B

    Class A Award

    One $6,000 award will be given a Litter Grant Program in one of the following counties: Bedford, Benton, Bledsoe, Campbell, Cannon, Cheatham, Chester, Claiborne, Clay, Cocke, Crockett, Decatur, DeKalb, Dyer, Fayette, Fentress, Franklin, Grainger, Grundy, Hancock, Hardeman, Hardin, Haywood, Henderson, Hickman, Houston, Humphreys, Jackson, Jefferson, Johnson, Lake, Lauderdale, Lewis, Loudon, Macon, Marion, Marshall, McNairy, Meigs, Moore, Morgan, Overton, Perry, Pickett, Polk, Rhea, Scott, Sequatchie, Smith, Stewart, Tipton, Trousdale, Unicoi, Union, and Van Buren, Warren, Wayne, and White Counties.

    Class B Award

    One $6,000 award will be given to a Litter Grant Program in one of the following counties: Anderson, Blount, Bradley, Carroll, Carter, Coffee, Cumberland, Davidson, Dickson, Gibson, Giles, Greene, Hamblen, Hamilton, Hawkins, Henry, Knox, Lawrence, Lincoln, McMinn, Madison, Maury, Monroe, Montgomery, Obion, Putnam, Roane, Robertson, Rutherford, Sevier, Shelby, Sullivan, Sumner, Washington, Weakley, Williamson, and Wilson Counties.

  • Category 5 Keep America Beautiful TN Affiliate Award

    Awards will be given for first ($6,000), second ($4,000), and third ($2,000) to TN based KAB applicants. Affiliates must be in good standing with KAB national office.

  • Category 6 Keep Tennessee Beautiful State Level Affiliate Award

    Awards will be given for first ($5000), second ($3000) and third ($2000) to Keep Tennessee Beautiful State Affiliate applicants who have participated in the Tennessee Great American Cleanup, and at least one additional KTnB approved activity, attended Biennial Conference or Affiliate retreat, a workshop, webinar or training, as well as submit an annual survey and report with volunteers and volunteer hours.
